Easy Steps to Install a Ceiling Fan in Your Home: A Beginner's Guide

Installing a ceiling fan in your home can help move the air around and save you money on energy costs, among other things. We can definitely help with your ceiling fan installation in Portland and the surrounding areas, but many people find installing a ceiling fan something they prefer to DIY. Even if you don't know a lot about electrical work or find the construction process difficult to understand, you might be able to install a ceiling fan on your own by following these steps.

Before you start make sure you have everything you need, like th ceiling fan (and box it comes in which will have many of the parts you need), wire nuts, electrical tape, a voltage tester, a screwdriver, and pliers. Also, make sure that the power to the room where you will be putting the fan has been turned off. Turning off the power is one of the most important safety steps in this process.

Step 1: Put the ceiling fan together.

The first step is to put the fan together. Follow the directions in the fan kit to make sure that everything is linked correctly.

Step 2: Take off the old thing

Next, take the old thing out. Unscrew the old light from the ceiling and take it down, but don't cover the wires.

Step 3: Connect the wires.

Find the wiring in the ceiling and connect the ceiling fan's wires to the right ones. This could mean joining the white wires, the black wires, and the green or bare wires. Specific instructions for your fan will also likely be in your fan's instructions. Use wire nuts to hold the connections together, and use electrical tape to cover the connections.

Step 4. Put the mounting bracket in place.

Put the mounting bracket on the ceiling power box. Use screws to hold the bracket in place.

Step 5: Put the fan on the mounting bracket.

Follow the directions in the fan kit to put the fan on the mounting bracket. Make sure the fan is attached to the bracket firmly.

Step 6: Put the fan blades in place.

Follow the directions in the fan kit to attach the fan blades to the fan motor. Make sure that each blade is connected to the motor in a secure way.

Step 7: Switch on the electricity

Once you're done with the installation, turn on the power to the room and test the fan to make sure it's working.

Installing a ceiling fan in your home is a great do-it-yourself job that has many benefits. By doing these easy steps, you can put a ceiling fan in your home and enjoy better air flow and lower energy costs. But if you aren't sure how to work with electrical wiring, don't have the time, or have other projects in your home that require a professional handyman, you may want to give us a call to complete the project for you.

Employee of the Month: Putting Customers First and Building Beautiful Bathrooms

If your faucet is dripping, it can be annoying and wasteful, cause your water bill to go up, and damage your sink and surfaces. Luckily, fixing a broken faucet isn't too hard and can be done with just a few tools and a little bit of know-how. In this "do-it-yourself" guide, we'll show you how to fix a broken faucet.

You can also watch a short video about fixing a faucet leak from our partners at Ace Hardware.

Step 1: Turn off the water supply
Make sure to turn off the water to the tap before you start. This will stop the water from running while you work on it and keep things from getting messy.

Step 2: Take off the handle
Next, take the faucet's handle off. Depending on the type of tap, you may need to remove a screw, pry off a cap, or unscrew a set screw.

Step 3: Take out the cylinder or stem of the valve
Once you take off the handle, you should be able to see the cartridge or valve stem. This part controls how much water flows. To take it off, use tools or a wrench.

Step 4: Inspect each piece
Check for damage, rust, or wear on the cartridge or valve stem. If you find problems with a part, it's best to repair or replace it.

Step 5: Replace any parts that are broken
If the cartridge or valve stem is broken, you can get a new one at a hardware shop. Make sure that the part fits your faucet's exact make and model. It's helpful to bring the pieces to the hardware store or take photos to show the staff who can help you. We find this one of the hacks that help those red-vested heroes at your local Ace be even more helpful!

Step 6: Put the tap back together
Once you have the new parts, put the faucet back together just like you took it apart.

Step 7: Turn on the tap.
The last step is to turn the water back on and test the opening to ensure it works. If the leak keeps happening, you might need to call a handyman to take a look.

In the end, fixing a broken faucet is easy and can be done with simple tools and some do-it-yourself skills. With a bit of time and care, you can save money on your water bill and keep your sink and surfaces from getting damaged. And if that sounds too much, call us at Ace Handyman Services Portland, and we can help you take one more thing off your to-do list!

A Handyman's Guide to Fixing Your Fence

As a local handyman business that fixes a lot of wood fences, we'd like to share the steps we take to finish the job and how long you can expect it to take.

First, we must assess the damage to your fence. For you, this can mean looking at the whole structure, finding broken or damaged posts, and determining if any fence boards are damaged. If you snap a few photos of those, we can look Once we've looked at the damage and give you an estimate of how long and how much it will cost to fix it.

Fence Repairs: The Tools, Materials and Process
For fence repairs, we'll bring the tools needed to start the repair. This usually includes a saw, hammer, nails, screws, and new boards or posts for the fence. If the damage involves posts, we'll bring tools like a post-hole digger or a cement mixer. If you need us to source the material, we can do that for you too! Our handyman will come on-site, list what needs to be purchased, like deck screws, slats, posts, and cement bags, and then head to the store to grab the materials.

How our handyman approaches your fence repair depends on what needs to be fixed. In general, they'll remove any broken or damaged boards or posts, replace them with new ones, and strengthen the fence to ensure it's stable and safe. This can be done by putting back loose or wobbly boards, adding cement to posts, or adding more support beams to the fence.

Overall, the length of time it takes to fix a fence will depend on the extent of damage is and how big the fence is. Most of the time, a simple repair to a small section of fence can be done in a few hours. Fences that need more work can take a whole day or longer.

A Handyman for Preventative Maintenance
It's important to remember that keeping your fence in good shape can help keep you from having to fix it in the first place. If you regularly check your fence for damage, clean it to prevent rot or mold, and seal it with a protective coat, you can make it last longer and avoid paying for expensive repairs.  The good news is that we can also help you with that preventative maintenance.

Even though fence repairs can take a lot of time, they are essential for keeping your property safe and secure. Hiring a trustworthy handyman and taking care of your fence can ensure it stays in good shape for many years.

If you want to know how long it will take to fix your fence, give us a call.

Spruce Up Your Space: The Ultimate Guide to Pressure Washing in Portland

If you own a home in the Portland, Oregon, area, you're probably familiar with the Pacific Northwest's lush greenery and beautiful landscapes. But with all that rain comes a lot of buildup on the sidewalks, decks, and outside of your house, that's why you should pressure wash your property often if you want it to look its best.

First of all, let's talk about the outside of your house. When you use pressure to clean your home's siding, you can eliminate the moss, algae, and dirt that can grow on it. This is especially important in the Portland area, where rain and dampness are common. Moss and algae can grow quickly and damage the outside of your home over time, which can cost a lot to fix. By pressure washing the exterior of your home at least once a year, you can protect it from damage and make it last longer.

Let's move on to sidewalks. In the Portland area, it's not unusual for moss and other trash to grow on the sidewalks. This can make them hard to walk on and dangerous. Pressure washing your sidewalks regularly can eliminate the buildup and make them safer for you, your family, and your guests. Plus, it will make your property look better and more inviting as a whole.

Last but not least, don't forget your deck. Decks can be a good place for mold and mildew to grow in the Pacific Northwest. This not only makes your deck look bad, but it can also cause problems with how it is built. Regular pressure washing lets you get rid of mold and stop damage so that you can enjoy your deck for many years.

Because it rains a lot in the Portland area, you may need to pressure wash your property more often to keep it in good shape. We recommend pressure washing at least once a year, but twice a year is probably best - once at the beginning of Spring and once at the end of Spring once the rain says goodbye for a bit.

In conclusion, homeowners in the Portland, Oregon, area must pressure wash their homes and exterior spaces regularly. It can protect the outside of your house from damage, make your sidewalks safer, and make your deck last longer. So, if you want your property to look its best, why not pay for a professional, local handyman to help - you don't really want to do it, do you?

Five things homeowners can do this Spring to prepare for Summer

As the weather gets warmer and the flowers bloom in Portland, it's time to start getting your house ready for summer. Here are the top five things that homeowners should do to get their homes ready for the season:

  1. Clean and Repair Gutters and Clean and Repair Downspouts: It rains a lot in Portland in the spring (and winter too, obvi ;)), so it's important to clear out your gutters and downspouts. Water damage to your home's foundation can be caused by clogged gutters, so take the time to clean them out or hire a pro to do it for you. We can help with gutter and downspout repairs and some cleaning (though you might find one of our partners better priced for cleaning gutters - oftentimes they also clean and inspect roofs too, which is a service we don't provide).
  2. Check your roof. The winters in Portland can be rough, and your roof may have been hurt. Look for signs of damage on your roof, like missing shingles or leaks, and fix anything that needs to be fixed before the summer storms hit. It probably goes without saying, but please be careful. Getting on your roof, especially if there is a lot of moss buildup, can be exceptionally dangerous. It's always a good idea to hire a professional to do this, and we have some incredible partners we can refer (and they can probably take care of your gutters too).
  3. Service Your Air Conditioner. Summers in Portland can get hot, so it's now essential to make sure your air conditioner is ready for the heat. Set up a service appointment to have your system checked out, cleaned, and fixed if it needs to be. Our friends at Lakeside HVAC can help you with this.
  4. Check Your Deck. Your deck is a great place to enjoy the summer weather, but it also needs to be taken care of. Check your deck for signs of rot or damage, and fix anything that needs fixing. You could also have it power washed and resealed to protect it from the weather. See below to see more tips on deck inspection. During your handyman appointment with us, our local handymen can also inspect your deck as part of our free home maintenance checklist.
  5. Prepare Your Yard. Summers in Portland are all about being outside, so get your yard ready. Cut back any bushes or trees that have grown too big, plant some new flowers, and fix up your outdoor furniture if it needs it. Consider adding some outdoor lighting to make your yard feel warm and welcoming at night. We can help you with some outdoor work or we can refer you to some of our incredible landscaping partners.
Ultimately, getting your Portland home ready for summer doesn't have to be a hard job. By following these top 5 tips, you can ensure that your home is prepared for the warm weather and that you can enjoy your time outside. These easy steps will help you make the most of the season, from cleaning your gutters to getting your yard ready.

Deck Repairs: DIY or hire a pro?

Hey, homeowners! You need to repair your deck, but you're unsure if you should call a handyman or do it yourself. Don't worry because we're here to tell you when to hire us to fix your deck and when to do it yourself.

First, let's talk about why it's a good idea to hire a handyman. One reason is that they are professionals with the experience and skills to do the job quickly and well. They also come with the right tools and materials to make the repair, so you don't have to buy or rent them yourself. Also, a handyman can finish the job quickly, which is important if you don't have much time. At Ace Handyman Services Portland, we also guarantee the work of our handyman for a year, so you can have the work performed with many guarantees!

But, depending on how many repairs need to be done, hiring a handyman can also be expensive. If you're more cost-conscious (which in this economy, we totally get), it might be better to do the repairs yourself. But some repairs should only be done by a professional. In these situations, it's better to be safe than sorry, so it's best to call a handyman to ensure the repair is done right and safely.

On the other hand, if you feel confident that you can make the repair yourself, go for it! Online, you can find many resources, like how-to videos and articles, that can help you through the process. Doing the repairs yourself can be fun and rewarding, especially if you like doing "do-it-yourself" projects.

Still, there are some things to think about before you start a DIY deck repair project. Before you start, ensure you have the right tools and materials and fully understand how to fix the problem. Also, it's essential to take safety measures, like wearing protective gear and being careful when using power tools.

Ultimately, whether you hire a handyman to fix your deck or do it yourself depends on how much work needs to be done, how much money you have, and how experienced and confident you are with DIY projects. If you're unsure what to do, it's always better to be safe and call a pro. Happy repairing!

Decks: How to know when it's time for a repair.

Depending on the type of material your deck is made of, the dampness of the Portland climate will require regular deck repairs. But how do you know when it's time for a repair and when you can just hold off. Here are a few things our handyman recommend looking for when considering deck repairs:
  • Railing is sagging or unstable. If the railing on your deck is sagging or unstable, it may need to be fixed or replaced. Particularly if you have young children or elderly family members/guests around often. In these instances, a weak or unsteady railing might be dangerous.
  • Boards are cracked or warped. With time, exposure to the environment can cause deck boards to become cracked or warped. It is advisable to replace any boards that are cracked or uneven. Especially with the dampness of our climate, cracks can quickly turn to rot.
  • Wood rot is present, especially in areas of foot traffic. Wood that has begun to decay can be identified by any portions of your deck that feel soft or porous to the touch. Your deck's safety may be jeopardized by the structural weakness caused by rotting wood.
  • Stains or discoloration. Water damage may be the cause of any stains or discoloration on your deck. Wood that has been exposed to water may rot or deform. If you see stains or discoloration, it's worth exploring a deck repair.
  • Missing or loose screws. If the fasteners holding your deck together are missing or loose, it may be time to get the deck repaired. The deck could shift or move dangerously due to loose screws.
  • Surface that slopes or is uneven. If the surface of your deck slopes or is uneven, this may indicate that the deck's support system or foundation is in jeopardy.
To protect the safety of your deck, it's crucial to perform these home repairs and take care of these indicators as soon as you detect them.

Introducing our home checklist

Last week, we started working with our handyman teammates to incorporate a new home checklist into their local appointments in clients' homes. This allows our handyman teammates to partner with homeowners to 1. identify minor problems before they become big problems, 2. percent problems, 3. discuss how much nice to have home improvement projects might cost and the steps involved.

Having a handyman use a home checklist while they are there have many advantages, including:
  • Complete evaluation: A home checklist assists the handyman in performing a full review of the house and identifying any areas that need repair. This guarantees that every issue is addressed and that nothing is overlooked.
  • Workflow efficiency: With a home checklist, the handyman can operate methodically and rank chores according to their urgency. This ensures that the most urgent problems are handled first, helping avoid further damage and expensive repairs.
  • Accuracy is improved since a home checklist ensures that nothing is overlooked or forgotten and that every detail is accurately recorded. By doing this, errors and misconceptions that can cause extra expenses and delays can be avoided.
  • Enhancing communication: A home checklist offers a clear and comprehensive record of the work that could be completed and the issues that must be rectified, improving communication. This complements our Service Path process and helps the homeowner and handyman continue to communicate better and make sure that everyone is on the same page for future projects
  • Preventive upkeep: A home checklist might assist the handyman in seeing potential concerns before they become bigger issues. Long-term, this can save the homeowner time, money, and stress.
In general, implementing a home checklist can ensure that the homeowner's needs are handled effectively and efficiently, reducing potential problems. If you're thinking about repairing the siding on your home, here's a quick overview of the siding repair process. The exact steps for repairing siding can vary depending on the type of siding and the extent of the damage. However, here are some general steps that can guide you through the process:

  • Identify the type of siding: Different types of siding require different repair methods. Some common types of siding include wood, vinyl, fiber cement, and metal.
  • Inspect the damage: Determine the extent of the damage by inspecting the siding carefully. Look for cracks, holes, rot, or other signs of wear or damagedamange.
  • Remove damaged siding: Use a pry bar to remove the damaged siding. Be careful not to damage adjacent pieces of siding in the process.
  • Cut replacement siding: Measure and cut the replacement siding to fit the area that needs repair.
  • Install replacement siding: Use nails or screws to install the replacement siding. Ensure the new siding is securely fastened and leveled with the surrounding siding.
  • Caulk and seal: Apply caulking or sealant to the edges of the new siding to prevent water or air from entering.
  • Paint or finish: If necessary, paint or finish the new siding to match the surrounding siding.
  • Clean up: Dispose of any damaged siding and clean the work area.

It is important to note that siding repair can be a complex task and may require specialized tools and expertise. If you are unsure about your ability to repair your siding, it may be best to call your local Ace Handyman to help!

It's not too early to start thinking about home siding repairs

Winter weather, especially this one in the Portland area, that’s been filled with snow, sleet, hail, and high winds can wreak havoc on the siding of all types. This time of year is the perfect time to address any damages, before more Spring showers and summer heat. Several signs can indicate that your siding needs repairs, including:

  • Visible damage: Look for cracks, holes, or dents in your siding. These can be caused by hail, wind, or other weather-related events.
  • Fading or discoloration: It may be time for repairs if your siding is fading or changing color. This can be caused by exposure to sunlight, rain, or other elements.
  • Warping or buckling: If your siding starts to warp or buckle, it may be due to moisture getting behind it. This can lead to rot and other problems.
  • Peeling or chipping paint: If the paint on your siding is starting to peel or chip, it may be time to repaint. This can help protect your siding from further damage.
  • High energy bills: If your energy bills are higher than usual, it could indicate that your siding allows air to escape from your home. This can happen if your siding is damaged or not correctly installed.

Call your local handyman if you notice any of these signs. We can perform a professional inspection, make repairs, and get your home looking as good as new in just one appointment. We know some of our customers are handy and prefer to do smaller home repair jobs independently. For siding repairs, repairing siding yourself or calling your local handyman will depend on a few factors, including your level of expertise, the complexity of the repair, and the tools and materials needed for the job. Here are some things to consider:

  • If you have experience with basic home repairs and feel confident in completing the repair safely and effectively, you can tackle a small siding repair independently. However, if you are unsure of what to do or lack the necessary skills or tools, it may be better to hire a local handyman to avoid causing further damage or injury.
  • Additionally, if the siding repair is extensive or requires special materials or tools, it may be best to call a professional handyman. We can assess the damage, provide a proper estimate, and ensure the repair is completed correctly.
  • If the job is too big for our multi-skilled handyman, we can also refer you to some of our siding partners with more experience in things full, new home siding installations.

In general, it's always a good idea to err on the side of caution regarding siding repairs. If you're unsure whether you can handle the repair independently, it's best to call your local handyman to avoid causing further damage or putting yourself at risk.
