Must Know Safety Tips Next Time You Use a Ladder
There’s a moment when you’re at the top of a trembling ladder and you grip on for dear life. You then wonder, “Am I doing this right”? A ladder can often be something you must endure to get your high up tasks done. That’s why we’ve prepared a shortlist of precautions to keep in mind to help you next time you have to climb a ladder.

1. One Person at a Time Two heads may be better than one, but using a ladder is a different story. Never have more than one person on a ladder at a time. It may be tempting to get multiple things done at once, but two different weights moving on one ladder can be very dangerous. 2. Avoid the Top 2 Steps Sometimes you’re going to be tempted to climb higher to reach your project, but you should avoid stepping on the top two steps of the ladder. Most ladders aren’t designed for you to be that high, and you also risk losing your balance. The safest place to do your work is from the middle steps of the ladder. 3. Keep 3 Points of Contact The best way to secure yourself when climbing up or down a ladder is with three points of contact; two hands and at least one foot on the ladder at all times will help keep you secure and avoid failing. Another thing you want to avoid is overreaching. That will shift the weight on the ladder, leading to a higher risk of an accident. 4. The 4 to 1 Rule When placing a ladder against a building, one of the best ways to ensure its stability is following this rule. Place the ladder one foot away from the building for every four feet of height. For example, if the ladder is resting 16 feet high, then you should place the bottom four feet away from the building. If you follow these four easy rules, then you can minimize the risk of an injury. For more tips on ladder safety, take a look at the U.S. Department of Labor’s recommendations here. And of course, if ladders are still an object you want to avoid, no worries. We can send one of our Craftsmen and get the job taken care of for you. It’s getting time to shut down your swamp cooler

Maintaining your wood deck may also require repairing or replacing loose or broken boards that can make your deck unsafe to walk on. Surface boards as well as joists can rot, so inspect the deck at least once a year for signs of rot. Even a pressure-treated or preserved-wood deck can suffer loose screws or boards. It's best to hire a professional to replace any boards that are twisting, lifting or rotted. To replace rotted or broken boards, remove the screws and use the damaged board as a template to cut a new board of the same material. Once you remove the rotted board, check the joists underneath to be sure they are free of rot. Contact Handyman Matters if you see any signs of rot, as this is a bigger job and will require repairing or replacing the joists. If the rot is localized to a specific area of the joist, a "sister" board can be attached to the joist to support the surface boards instead of replacing the entire joist. A professional handyman will be able to determine if this is the best course of repair. To replace the old board with a new one, drill pilot holes into the board where it should attach to the joists, then screw in the new board to the joists. You can book your Handyman today and have a professional do the work! Pictured: Dan, Jerry, Matt, Mark, Ricky, Sean, Kim, Mark, Warren, Kipp, Neil, Kat A special THANK YOU to Alanna, Dana and Kate for holding down the office! Ace Handyman Services helped a family that just moved back home to Colorado. During the move the husband became ill bringing them to a single income situation with a young teenage daughter and a son in the service. The grandmother was just diagnosed with cancer. The family moved into their family home and discovered there was damage. Some friendly wood peckers punctured holes in their siding and took out the insulation to build their nests leaving holes up to 4 inches! Handyman Matters of Denver replaced siding and made repairs to the gable of their home, replaced the thermostat and repaired some leaky faucets and installed a new shower head! The family was so thankful but the true joy was paying it forward in our community! As a TEAM, we completed a 3-day job in half a day! UPDATING YOUR KITCHEN AND BATHROOM WITH AN EYE TOWARD SAFETY
The costs of a kitchen or a bathroom remodel can range from small to large. Naturally, your primary focus is going to be on having an attractive room that’s a source of pride and pleasure for you and your family, but Ace Handyman Services wants you to keep this in mind at the same time: Beauty—at the expense of safety—is too a high price to pay. Flooring – Tumbles and falls in kitchens and bathrooms account for a majority of injuries sustained in all areas of the house. Flooring should have enough texture to grip your feet. A variety of attractive, slip-resistant tiles, woods and other options are readily available when you are contemplating changing out your floors. Lighting – As you consider the various lighting options available to you, strive for a balance between what looks great and what is most practical for the tasks at hand. In the kitchen, where a lot of preparations require using knives, gripping pans and transferring hot items, maximum lighting is essential. Options to consider include motion-sensor lights or switches that can be operated with a simple nudge. Clearance Space– Take into consideration the extraneous items that may have been creating obstructions and blocking the flow of traffic—bathroom scales, pet dishes, step stools, chairs, etc. Remodeling is the perfect time to incorporate ways to get these items out of high-traffic areas. Pullout shelving and recessed spaces are a couple of good options for eliminating some of these obstacles. Other things to consider– Shallower sinks make it easier to rinse dishes as well as fruits and vegetables. Single-lever faucets reduce the risk of scalding with hot water. A side-opening oven door enables you to insert and remove items without leaning over a standard lowered door when the surface is hot. A remodel is the ideal time to consider adjusting cabinets to make them more accessible and to create additional counter space where the appliances are more conveniently reached. Homeowners in Littleton, Lakewood, Parker, Castle Rock, Centennial, Morrison, Belmar, Chatfield, Littleton or anywhere in the Southwest Denver Metro area, if you’re contemplating a kitchen or bathroom redo, give one of our friendly associates in our Centennial Handyman Matters office a call. We’re happy to listen to your plans and to help you realize your dream of the perfect kitchen, bathroom… or both!
