A single cracked floor tile, a wall tile that sounds hollow, grout crumbling out of the shower joints: bathroom tile problems in Clayton homes usually start small. Most of them don't call for tearing out the whole bathroom. The trick is knowing which problems are cosmetic and which mean water is getting where it shouldn't. Our tile repair and installation team in Clayton handles everything from one replaced tile to a retiled shower, in Clayton, Garner, Smithfield and across Johnston County.
Why do bathroom tiles crack?
- Movement underneath. A floor that flexes (joists spanning too far or a thin subfloor) cracks tile and grout along the same line.
- Settling. Newer Johnston County homes settle in their first few years, and hairline cracks often follow.
- Impact. A dropped shampoo bottle or hair dryer can crack a single tile without any deeper problem.
- Poor coverage when installed. Tiles set on a few dabs of thinset instead of full coverage are hollow underneath and crack under load.
Can you replace just one cracked tile?
Usually, yes. The grout around the tile is cut out, the cracked tile is broken out without disturbing its neighbors, the old thinset is cleaned off, and a new tile is set and grouted. The catch is finding a match. If you have spare tiles from the original job (look in the garage or attic), that's ideal. If not, we'll help you find the closest match, or take a tile from a hidden spot such as under the vanity.

Cutting a replacement to fit around a toilet or a tub takes care. When the cracked tile sits against the toilet, we pull the toilet rather than trying to notch a tile around its base, so the new tile can be cut to the flange and the toilet goes back down on a fresh seal. Porcelain is hard and brittle, and a tile that's cut too close can break on the saw. That's one reason to keep more than one spare from your original install.
If several tiles in a line are cracked, the cause is usually movement in the floor, and that has to be looked at before new tiles go down.
What does a hollow-sounding or loose tile mean?
Tap the tiles with a coin or the handle of a screwdriver. A dull, hollow sound means the tile has come loose from the thinset. On a floor, a few hollow tiles can be lifted and reset. In a shower, loose wall tiles are a warning sign: water may be getting behind the tile through failed grout or caulk. If the wall behind feels soft or the tiles move when pressed, it's time to open it up before the damage spreads.
Regrout, recaulk or retile: which does your bathroom need?
| You see… | Usually means… | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cracked or crumbling grout between field tiles | Grout has worn out; tiles are solid | Regrout: old grout is removed and new grout installed (a good time to change the grout color) |
| Gaps or mildew where the tub or shower meets the wall, or at inside corners | Failed caulk at a change of plane | Recaulk with silicone (allow 24 hours before showering) |
| One or a few cracked or hollow tiles | Impact or a few poorly set tiles | Replace those tiles |
| Many loose tiles, a soft wall or a leak below | Water behind the tile | Retile the area after the damaged backing is repaired |

Caulk and grout aren't interchangeable. Grout goes between tiles on the same flat surface; caulk goes wherever two surfaces meet, because those joints move. Our caulk and grout replacement service handles both. For moisture problems around the tub and the exhaust fan, see bathroom fixes that don't need a full remodel.
"Ethan at ACE handyman services was great! We had several items to complete such as cleaning and recaulking bathtubs, filling in some holes and replacing weather stripping and swollen wood pieces."

When is it time to redo the bathroom instead?
If the shower has widespread loose tile and soft backing, if the floor tile is cracking across the room, or if you're replacing the vanity and toilet anyway, a larger refresh may make more sense than piecemeal repairs. Our bathroom remodel and refresh team can scope it with you.
What affects the cost of tile repair?
We bill by time and materials, so we don't publish a set price. What moves the total:
- How many tiles need replacing
- Whether matching tile is on hand
- Whether the backing or subfloor needs repair
- Regrouting the surrounding area, and caulking
Call and describe what you see, and we'll talk through the likely fix.
Who will come to your home?
Every Ace Handyman Services craftsman is a background-checked, insured W-2 employee (not a subcontractor). You'll get an on-my-way text with your craftsman's name and photo, and our one-year workmanship warranty covers the work.
Frequently asked questions
Can a single cracked tile be replaced?
Yes. The grout around it is cut out, the cracked tile is removed without damaging its neighbors, and a new tile is set and grouted. Leftover tiles from the original install make the best match. If several tiles crack along one line, the floor underneath is likely flexing and should be checked first.
Why is my bathroom floor tile cracking?
The most common causes are a floor that flexes underneath, normal settling in newer homes, a heavy item dropped on one tile, or tiles that were set without full thinset coverage. One cracked tile is usually a simple replacement. Cracks that run across several tiles point to movement that needs attention first.
Should I regrout or replace my shower tile?
Regrout when the tiles are solid and only the grout is cracked, stained or crumbling. Replace the tile, and repair the backing behind it, when tiles are loose, the wall feels soft, or water shows up outside the shower. Tapping each tile for a hollow sound is a quick first check.
How long does bathroom tile repair take?
Replacing a few tiles or regrouting a small area usually fits into one visit, with the grout needing time to cure before heavy use. Recaulked joints need 24 hours before the shower is used. Larger repairs that involve the backing or subfloor take longer; your craftsman will confirm the timing first.
