Cold air sliding across the floor by the front door is one of the first signs of winter in older Durham and Chapel Hill homes. The good news: most drafty doors don't need to be replaced. A worn seal, a sagging hinge or a threshold that has dropped a quarter inch can let in as much cold air as a cracked window, and each of those is a one-visit fix. Here is how to tell what your door needs before you start feeling cold wind inside your home.
Why is my front door drafty?
Exterior doors leak air in four predictable places:
- The bottom. A worn or missing door sweep, or a threshold that has worked loose, leaves a gap you can often see daylight through.
- The sides and top. Foam and rubber weatherstripping compresses and cracks after a few years of Triangle summers. Once it stops touching the door, air moves freely.
- The latch side. If the door has sagged on its hinges, it no longer presses evenly against the seal. You will usually notice the latch getting harder to catch, too.
- Around the frame. Dried-out caulk or gaps behind the trim let air in around the outside of the frame, even when the door itself seals well.
A quick test: on a windy day, run the back of your hand slowly around the closed door. A cold line tells you exactly where the problem is. At night, light showing under or around the door means the same thing.
Weatherstripping or a new door: how do you know which you need?
Ask three questions.
Is the slab still solid and square? If the door closes flat against the stop all the way around, new weatherstripping, a new sweep and a threshold adjustment will usually stop the draft.
Is there rot or warping? Soft wood at the bottom of the frame, a threshold that flexes underfoot, or a slab that bows away from the seal points to replacement. Durham's humidity is hard on wood doors and frames that have not been kept painted and caulked.
Did new seals fix it? If the door still leaks after the seals are replaced and the hinges are tightened, the slab or frame has moved too far to seal, and replacement is the more lasting answer.
Our door repair and installation team in Durham checks all three on the first visit and tells you plainly which way to go.
Can a handyman fix a drafty door in one visit?
Usually, yes. A typical draft visit includes:
- Replacing worn weatherstripping on the sides and head of the frame
- Installing or replacing the door sweep
- Raising or resetting an adjustable threshold
- Tightening hinges, or adding longer screws that bite into the framing so the door stops sagging
- Moving the strike plate so the door latches firmly against the seal
- Recaulking the exterior trim where the frame meets the siding or brick
Because these are small jobs, they pair well with other winter fixes. While a craftsman is at your door, it makes sense to look at the other two big draft sources in most homes: windows that need repair or resealing and the pull-down stairs in the hallway ceiling. An old attic hatch is often thin, uninsulated plywood with no seal at all, and it can leak warm air straight into the attic all winter. If yours is wobbly or drafty, ask about attic ladder installation and replacement on the same visit.

- Arrived right on time and fixed my front and back door weatherstripping. Thanks!- Megan L. Durham, June 2026
How much does it cost to fix a drafty door in Durham?
It depends on what the door needs, which is why we don't publish a price. We bill by time and materials, so a simple sweep and weatherstripping job costs much less than resetting a sagging frame or replacing a rotted threshold. The things that move the total are:
- Scope. One door or several, and seals only versus frame or threshold repair
- Condition. Rot, prior patch jobs or out-of-square frames take longer to correct
- Access. Storm doors, sidelights and tight porches add time
- Replacement. A full exterior door replacement is a bigger project than a seal repair
Call us and describe what you are seeing. We can talk through the scope over the phone so you know what to expect before anyone arrives. Larger projects of $2,000 or more may qualify for 0% financing for 6 months, subject to approval.
When should you replace an exterior door instead?
Replacement makes sense when:
- The bottom of the door or frame is soft, stained or crumbling
- The slab is warped or cracked, or the glass panel is fogged between the panes
- The door still leaks after new seals and adjustment
- The lock or latch no longer lines up no matter how the hinges are set
When we replace a door, the new unit is fitted, shimmed, sealed and adjusted so it latches cleanly and closes tight against the weatherstripping. That last step is what actually stops the draft.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to fix a drafty exterior door? Most draft fixes take a single visit. Replacing weatherstripping, adding a door sweep and adjusting the threshold or strike plate usually fits in a few hours. A full exterior door replacement takes longer, often most of a day, because the frame, trim and seals all need to be fitted and checked.
Is it better to repair or replace a drafty door? Repair it if the door is solid and square and the draft comes from worn seals, a gap at the bottom or a sagging hinge. Replace it if the door is warped, the frame or threshold is rotted, or it still leaks after new seals. Our craftsman can tell you which on the first visit.
Can you fix my drafty door and other repairs in the same visit? Yes. Door adjustments and weatherstripping pair well with other small jobs, so many Durham and Chapel Hill homeowners bundle them with caulking, drywall touch-ups or an attic ladder check in one visit. Tell us your full list when you call, and we will plan enough time to finish it.
