Bathroom Remodel & Refresh in Durham & Chapel Hill, NC

When you bought the house, the bathroom was fine, maybe even nice. Ten years in, the caulk is yellowing, the vanity drawer doesn't quite close, the grout's gone gray no matter how hard you scrub, and that one tile near the tub has a crack you've been ignoring since 2019. Or maybe it's worse than that, the whole space hasn't been touched since the 90s and you're ready to gut it.

Either job is what we do.

Bradley took this Chapel Hill bathroom from its original yellow wall tile and octagon floor to a clean, modern space. He removed the old tile, laid a new black-and-white star tile floor, tiled the walls in white stacked tile, replaced the double vanity with two floating vanities, and finished the room with new wallpaper.

Ace Handyman Services Durham Chapel Hill handles bathroom work across the full spectrum for homeowners throughout Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Pittsboro, and the surrounding Triangle from a half-day refresh (recaulk, repaint, replace the vanity, swap the faucet) to a full master bathroom remodel with new plumbing (new plumbing through our licensed partners), custom shower, tile floor, and double vanities. Same craftsmen, same warranty, same time-and-materials pricing whether the job runs two hours or two weeks.

What "Bathroom Work" Actually Covers

Bathrooms span a wider range than most home services, and the right scope depends on what's actually wrong (and what you actually want). A rough map of where most of our Triangle bathroom jobs land:

Bathroom refresh half-day to two-day jobs

The bathroom looks tired but the bones are good. Common scope:

Most refreshes complete in one or two visits. This is also where bathrooms in rental properties, flips, and pre-listing prep typically land.

  • Damaged flooring and subfloor repair
  • Shower door replacement or realignment
  • Mirror upgrade
  • New tile floor over existing subfloor
  • New tile backsplash above the vanity

Full bathroom remodel, one to three week jobs

The bathroom is being substantially rebuilt. New layout, new tile, new vanities, sometimes new plumbing routing or shower configuration. We handle the labor end-to-end, demo, framing adjustments, drywall, tile, fixture install, paint, finish work. Because we bill time-and-materials, you stay in control of scope and budget at every step. You're not buying a packaged remodel, you're buying skilled craftsman hours and getting exactly the bathroom you specified.

Aging-in-place modifications

Bathroom safety upgrades for older homeowners or anyone planning ahead:

  • Grab bars
  • Walk-in shower conversions where layout permits
  • Comfort-height toilet replacement
  • Non-slip flooring
These often start as a single grab-bar visit and expand from there. We're happy to walk the bathroom and suggest what would actually help.

How We Work

★★★★★
"Safety handles installed in shower. Highly impressed. From the lady that took our info over the phone and set the appt to Ethan who was knowledgeable, skilled and personable we were very pleased. We set another appt for next week for additional items that require solutions."
— Dan C. · Shower safety handles · Durham, NC

We bill on a time-and-materials basis an hourly rate for craftsman time plus the cost of materials. No flat-rate package pricing. The advantage for bathroom work specifically: you stay in control of scope and budget. If you decide mid-project that you want a different vanity, or that the original shower layout works after all, the pricing flexes with the scope.

When you call (984) 343-0497, we'll talk through what you're trying to accomplish and give you a labor estimate over the phone before anything is scheduled. For larger projects — full remodels especially — we'll usually schedule a brief on-site visit to take measurements and photos, often paired with a smaller job you already have on the list so it doesn't cost a separate trip.

Every job is backed by our one-year labor warranty.

Why Triangle Homeowners Choose Us for Bathroom Work

  • Local craftsmen, not a national call center. The same team that handles drywall and door repair around Trinity Park, Meadowmont, and Briar Chapel handles bathroom work, they know the Triangle's mix of housing stock, from 1920s bungalows to brand-new construction.
  • Scope flexibility. A locally-owned Time & Material handyman service is the only category that can take a $200 caulk job and a $25,000 master remodel and treat both correctly. Specialty remodelers won't show up for the small one; cheap-and-fast crews can't deliver on the large one.
  • One-year warranty on labor. If something we did doesn't hold, we come back and fix it.
  • Background-checked, insured, W-2 employees, not subcontractors. We send the same person you'd want in your own house.
  • "On My Way" text notifications so you know who's arriving and when.
  • No deposit on most jobs, you pay when the work is done.
  • Clean work site. Drop cloths, vacuum, debris hauled off.

A Note on Triangle Housing Stock

The Durham, Chapel Hill, and Pittsboro footprint covers an unusually wide span of home types, and bathrooms in each behave differently:

  • Pre-war bungalows and historic homes: the Trinity Park and Old North Durham bungalows, the Westwood and Gimghoul-area homes near UNC, and the Victorian-era homes around the Pittsboro courthouse square. Plaster walls, settled floors, cast iron drains, out-of-square framing. These need a craftsman who's seen the quirks before.
  • Mid-century homes: Hope Valley, Glen Lennox, Coker Hills, Forest Hills. Original tile, original layout, often a single shared bathroom that's been worked around for decades.
  • Mill houses and post-war ranches: Watts-Hillandale, Old West Durham, parts of Carrboro. Compact bathrooms, original fixtures, plumbing that benefits from a careful upgrade rather than a rip-and-replace.
  • Newer planned-community construction: Meadowmont, Southern Village, Briar Chapel, Chatham Park, Fearrington Village, Powell Place, Woodcroft. Standardized layouts but homeowners often want to differentiate with tile, vanities, and finishes.

If your bathroom is in an older home and you've had remodelers tell you it's "more complicated than expected," it might just be that they don't do this kind of work often. We do.

Bathroom FAQs

How much does a bathroom remodel cost in the Triangle? It depends entirely on scope, finishes, and bathroom size. We bill on a time-and-materials basis, hourly labor plus materials, so the price tracks the actual project rather than a package estimate. A bathroom refresh (caulk, paint, fixture swap) might run a few hundred dollars in labor. A full master bath remodel can run into five figures depending on layout and material selection. Call (984) 343-0497 and we'll give you a labor estimate over the phone for your specific scope.

Do you do small bathroom jobs, or only full remodels? Both. About half our bathroom work is half-day refreshes, recaulk, repaint, swap a faucet, hang a mirror. The other half ranges from component replacement (vanity, toilet, tile floor) up through full remodels. We don't have a minimum project size beyond the standard one-hour minimum.

Do you serve Chapel Hill and Pittsboro, or just Durham? Yes, our Durham Chapel Hill office covers Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Pittsboro, and surrounding Triangle communities. Same craftsmen, same scheduling, same pricing model regardless of which town you're in.

Can you do the demolition too? Yes. Full-scope remodels include demo of existing finishes, fixtures, tile, and vanities as part of the project labor.

Do you handle plumbing work? We are limited with what we are able to do when it comes to plumbing, anything requiring a plumbing license will be communicated and we will provide you with great referral partners who can assist you with the licensed component.

Do you work on older homes? Much of housing in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Pittsboro is pre-1960, and we work on those bathrooms routinely. Plaster walls, out-of-square framing, settled floors, and original-era plumbing are all part of our standard work.

Will I need to be out of the house during a remodel? For most refreshes and component replacements, no. For full remodels, the bathroom itself will be unusable for the duration.

Are your craftsmen insured and background-checked? All our craftsmen are insured, background-checked, and uniformed. Our work is backed by a one-year labor warranty.

Do you require a deposit? No deposit required on most jobs. For larger remodels, we do require deposits, especially for specialty custom ordered materials.

How quickly can you start a bathroom remodel? Refreshes and component swaps can usually be scheduled within the same week. Full remodels involve more sequencing, materials need to be on hand before demo starts, and the start date depends on craftsman availability for the multi-day block. Most full remodels start within 2–4 weeks of the initial estimate.  For Onyx system installations, since they are custom to every bathroom, they can have an 8-12 week lead time.

Can you help with aging-in-place modifications? Yes. Grab bars, walk-in shower conversions,  and comfort-height toilets,. We're happy to walk the bathroom and suggest specific changes that would help often these grow from a single small visit.
