If one part of your composite deck feels soft, bouncy, or dips when you step on it, the boards are rarely the real problem. In most cases the wood framing underneath has weakened, and the fix is a framing repair, not a whole new deck.

Here is a recent backyard deck repair our team completed, plus what homeowners in Long Beach, Lakewood, and nearby communities should know before calling someone out.

What the homeowner noticed

One section of the deck had started to dip underfoot. From above, everything looked fine. The boards weren't cracked and the rest of the deck felt solid. But walking across that one area, you could feel it give.

Why do composite decks go soft in one spot?

Composite boards hold up well to sun and water, but they flex more than wood and depend on the framing underneath for support. When the joists below start to weaken, the boards follow. Common causes include:

  • Wood framing that sits close to the ground and takes on moisture over the years
  • Joists spaced a little too far apart for composite boards
  • Fasteners working loose as the wood around them breaks down

Because the framing is hidden, a soft spot is often the first and only warning sign.

What we found and how we fixed it

We removed only the boards over the problem area. Underneath, the old wood framing had broken down, with pieces split and falling apart along the edge of the patio.

New framing went in under that section to properly support the decking. With solid support in place, the existing composite boards were reinstalled, damaged fasteners were replaced, and the whole section was checked for movement. Then we cleaned up and hauled away the old material.

Reusing the original boards kept the deck looking consistent, so the repaired section matches the rest of the yard.

Should you repair or replace the deck?

If the problem is limited to one area and the rest of the deck is solid, a targeted framing repair is usually the practical choice. It takes less time and costs less than a full rebuild. If soft spots show up in several places, or the framing is failing across the whole deck, it's worth talking through a bigger repair or a replacement. Our craftsmen will look at what's underneath and give you a straight answer.

Quick deck check you can do yourself

  • Walk the whole deck slowly and notice any soft or bouncy areas
  • Look for boards that dip between supports
  • Check for screws or fasteners that are loose or popping up
  • Watch for gaps opening where boards meet
  • If you can see the framing at the edges, look for wood that is dark, split, or crumbly

Catching it early usually means a smaller, local repair instead of a bigger project later.
