Aging in place is a goal for many people as it allows them to remain in their own homes while maintaining their independence. Capable At Home Speicalists is collaborating with Ace Handyman Services Traverse City to offer comprehensive services for aging in place to support the community and its needs.For anyone looking to help a loved one age in place, the process typically starts with a thorough assessment of both the individual's needs and the home environment. This can include evaluating current and potential future physical and mental health, mobility issues, and potential hazards in the home. The areas of the home that should be included in an assessment are:
- Exterior: Deck, patio, or bacony surfaces; mailbox, siding, shrubs/plants, garage or carport
- Entry: Steps, lighting, doorway width, flooring, doorbell, where to place items once inside
- Thresholds and internal doors
- Overall Floor Plan: Single story living, including a full bath. Turn radius in living areas, workflow
- Hallways: Lighting and width of hallways
- Kitchen and Laundry: Counters, lighting, appliances, faucets, handles, workspace/flow, closet/storage space
- Bathroom: Tub/shower, toilet, sink/faucets, vanity, flooring, and lighting, closet/storage space
- Bedroom: Bed, closet, storage, maneuverability, lighting
- Stairways: Stair height and depth, handrails, lighting, availability for elevator or lift
- Home Accessiblity Improvements: Installing ramps, widening doorways, adding a second handrail, reducing thresholds, adding grab bars in bathrooms, or replacing a shower/tub combo with a walk-in shower.
- Safety Enhancements: Improving lighting, color/texture contrast to surfaces, securing loose carpets, thermostatic/anti-scald controls, or installing fall prevention systems.
- Convenience Upgrades: Adding ergonomic handles, adjusting countertop heights, increasing toilet height, or integrating smart home technology.
