When a composite deck dips or flexes under your feet, the problem is almost always the framing underneath, not the boards you walk on. That's exactly what we found on this Huntington Beach deck.

The homeowner had one section of their backyard deck that felt soft every time someone walked across it. From above, the boards looked fine. The color was good, nothing was cracked, and the rest of the deck felt solid. But stepping on that one area, you could feel it give.

Why does a composite deck dip or feel soft?

Composite boards are durable and low maintenance, but they're also more flexible than wood. They count on the framing below to hold them up at the right spacing. If that framing weakens or wasn't spaced closely enough to begin with, the boards start to sag between supports.

The catch is that many composite decks still sit on wood framing. The boards on top can look nearly new while the wood underneath has been sitting close to the ground for years, taking on moisture and slowly breaking down. Because you can't see it, the first sign is usually a soft spot or a dip in one area.

What we found under the boards

Our craftsman started by taking up only the boards needed to see what was going on below. Once they were off, the cause was clear. The old wood framing under that section had broken down, with some pieces split and falling apart along the edge of the patio.

No amount of new screws or board adjustments would have fixed this. The boards needed something solid to sit on again.

How we fixed it

New framing went in under the affected area to properly support the decking. With solid support back in place, the existing composite boards were reinstalled, damaged fasteners were replaced, and the whole section was checked for movement before we called it done. We cleaned up the work area and hauled off the old material.

Reusing the existing boards kept the deck looking consistent, so the repaired section blends right in with the rest of the yard.

Signs your deck needs a closer look

If you notice any of these, it's worth having someone check underneath before the problem spreads:

  • A soft or bouncy spot in one area
  • Boards that dip between supports
  • Screws or fasteners working loose
  • Gaps opening up where boards meet

Catching it early usually means a smaller, local repair instead of a bigger rebuild later.
